Updated 5:15pm-- 7-19-17--- Senator John McCain of Arizona has been diagnosed with brain cancer. McCain had recently had surgery to address a blood clot above his left eye. McCain is 80 years old and has served as Arizona's senator since 1987.

Updated 11:43am-- 7-18-17--- Improving weather conditions on the south side of the Whittier Fire in Santa Barbara County have created an opportunity for firefighters to safely begin constructing fireline directly on the fire’s edge. Because of the reduced threat and improving conditions, the changes listed below are effective immediately: The following area has been reduced to an Evacuation Warning: • Calle Real north to West Camino Cielo, from Winchester Canyon Road on the east, to El Capitan Ranch Road on the west. This includes all roads and trails within the area of the order The following area remains in an Evacuation Warning: • Cachuma Village The following road closure remains in place: • West Camino Cielo, from Winchester Gun Club on the east side, to Refugio Road on the west side. Wagon Wheel, Winchester Commons and Langlo Ranch Road are not in the Evacuation Warning area. The Whittier Fire will continue to smolder for some time. These “smokers” are well inside the perimeter of the burn and do not pose a threat to the fireline.

Updated 5:55pm-- 7-17-17 --- Los Olivos--- the Mesa Fire's forward progress has been stopped... The fire is estimated to be around 50 acres in size. It started earlier today and was burning about 10 miles north of Highway 154... Air support diverted from the Whittier Fire was the key to keeping this fire from advancing farther than it did.

Updated 4:53pm-- 7-17-17--- Firefighters are battling the "Mesa Fire" .. It was first reported shortly before 3:00 p.m. today along the 10500 block of Foxen Canyon Road in the Los Olivos area and is about 10 miles north of Highway 154. Firefighters say the fire is reported to be "burning in heavy brush and spreading quickly" along both sides of the road. Foxen Canyon Road is closed down in the area. The fire was estimated to be between 25 and 30 acres. Firefighters say it has the potential to burn between 300 and 400 acres. Some firefighter resources are reportedly being diverted from the Whittier Fire.

Updated 10:22am-- 7-17-17-- Firefighters are making progress battling the Whittier Fire in Santa Barbara County. The threat level on the east side of the fire has been reduced significantly. With conditions improving, the changes listed below are effective immediately. The following Evacuation Warning has been lifted: Paradise Road is open The following Evacuation Orders have been lifted: West Camino Cielo is open to the Winchester Gun Club, including Kinevan Road Rosario Park, all of Stagecoach Road and Cold Springs are open The following Evacuation Warning remains valid: · Cachuma Village The following Evacuation Orders remain valid: · West Camino Cielo from the Winchester Gun Club to Refugio Road · Calle Real north to West Camino Cielo, from Winchester Canyon Road on the east to El Capitan Ranch Road on the west. This includes all roads and trails within the area of the order.

Updated 6:08pm--- 7-16-17-- Santa Barbara County--- Highway 154 is finally back open although the Whittier Fire continues burning. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office says firefighters have spent several days mopping up hot spots and removing hazards from the roadways. The California Department of Transportation, and Pacific Gas and Electric have been working alongside them to make repairs. Santa Barbara County declared a state of local emergency due to the Whittier and Alamo fires. The declaration will work toward getting federal assistance from the California Emergency Services Act when it comes to additional resources and aid. The declaration is currently under a 7-day time period. The Whittier Fire is currently 36 percent contained, with 18,015 acres burned, and several structures destroyed or damaged.

Updated 8:30am--- 7-16-17-- The Whittier Fire burning near Cachuma Lake grew slightly overnight with no additional containment reached. This morning, fire officials said a total of 18,015 had burned and containment was at 36 percent. Fire officials said sundowner winds expected Friday and again Saturday were a major concern, and that there was still a lot of unburned fuel around the perimeter of the fire. Fire officials are focusing on the eastern and western flanks of the fire. Crews gained even more containment of the Alamo Fire burning east of Twitchell Reservoir overnight, bringing the total now to 95 percent. The fire which broke out the afternoon of July 6th off Highway 166 has burned 28,687 acres. All evacuation orders have been lifted in the area, but fire officials urge residents to still use caution when driving in the area and urge anyone who sees significant smoke to call 9-1-1-. Highway 166 is open. Full containment is expected by July 22nd.

Updated 5:52pm-- 7-15-17-- The Santa Barbara county sheriffs office says a body was found in the creek in Las Canovas Canyon today.The sheriff's office says the report came in around 2 p.m. Deputies identified the man shortly after he was discovered as 57-year-old Eric "Sunny" Buttler, who was reported missing on June 28th.. His family has been notified. The circumstances surrounding his death were not made immediately available, however, the criminal investigations bureau is looking into the cause of death. Anyone with information is urged to call the sheriff's office at (805) 683-2724.

Updated 9:20am-- 7-15-17--- Santa Barbara County-- Containment of the Whittier Fire which started near Lake Cachuma has decreased to 35 percent as the fire grew more than 4,000 acres in size overnight. By this morning, fire officials said the fire had burned 17,364 acres. Friday evening, the estimate was 13,199 acres with 52 percent containment.Fire officials said sundowner winds expected yesterday and again today were a major concern, and that there was still a lot of unburned fuel around the perimeter of the fire. Utilities and public service agencies are reminding people to prepare for possible power outages due to increased fire danger to its transmission and distribution lines. A forest closure for the Whittier Fire area goes into effect Saturday. The Alamo Fire, which broke out more than a week ago off Highway 166, is now 93 percent contained as of Saturday morning, according to CAL FIRE. The fire has blackened a total of 28,687 acres, but has not grown in the past few days.Full containment is expected July 22nd.
